I just got this joke. Granted, the last time I actually sat down and watched the whole movie was when I was 14, but for my entire life I thought it was a “you two are not good looking people” joke. True story…when I was a kid, I used to want to be Snow White. There were no princesses of color and she was the only one who even came close to looking like me because she had black hair. (Kind of sad, because my skin was never going to be white. But I wanted it to be.)

I literally did not care a single thing for Disney until Mulan happened. Being of East Asian descent, Mulan was BIG for me. She still is. There are some aspects of her film that I wish were different, but that doesn’t take away from what she means for East Asian girls.
